2026 Vintage Paper Creations

It's never too early to get started on festive, handmade decorations. Using the simplest of mediums - paper - we'll create beautiful handmade ornaments and decorations perfect for the holiday season. You'll learn how to take sheet music, or other types of paper, and transform it into an elaborate rosette.

During this workshop, each participant will make a large rosette or wreath, along with a small "flower" ornament to use in the center.

No prior experience necessary, but guests should be aware that making paper ornaments involves visual acuity, fine-motor control, and working with hot glue.

Shaker Village is the perfect location to observe 2026's second lunar eclipse! Join us for a gentle evening hike as we enjoy Shaker Village by night and watch the beginnings of the eclipse. While maximum eclipse (at 12:15 a.m.) is a bit past our bedtime, we'll be able to watch the moon begin to darken and take on a reddish hue as the Earth's shadow blocks the light of the sun.

This program will take place outdoors, and is subject to cancellation in case of inclement weather or heavy cloud cover. If cancellation is necessary, Shaker Village will contact all registered guests.

What better time to enjoy a nighttime hike than in the light of the full moon? Traditionally, the full moon that falls closest to the autumnal equinox has always been known as the "Harvest Moon" - a time for farmers to finish gathering their summer crops and begin preparing for winter. Rising just before sunset, this year's Harvest Moon will be the perfect illumination for an evening stroll on the Preserve.

This hike will take place outdoors, rain or shine. Participants will traverse gravel, grass, and dirt pathways on a 1.5-3.0 mile loop along Shaker Village's trails. Participants should be comfortable walking in low light/semi-dark conditions. Participants may wish to bring a flashlight/headlamp, insect repellant and water.

The Harvest Moon Hike is intended for ages 12+. Tickets required for all attendees. Dogs are not permitted.

The annual Perseids meteor shower is a wonderful time to enjoy a relaxing evening of stargazing at Shaker Village! After a brisk 1.0-1.5 mile-hike to the best stargazing location at Shaker Village we’ll have blankets for you to spread out on the grass as we discuss summer constellations and the phenomenon of meteor showers. Don’t forget to make a wish on your first “shooting star.”

Join us for a special weekend of holiday workshops as Shaker Village celebrates Christmas in July! It's never too early to get started on your Christmas gift list. Inspired by the German tradition of using beeswax to create beautiful ornaments, we'll walk through the process of using ceramic molds to make decorations of pure beeswax. Participants will then get to choose from an assortment of provided mold options, making 3-4 ornaments to take home.

These elaborate stars, woven out of reed dyed in an assortment of colors, look beautiful on a Christmas tree or adorning a wreath, and they also make the perfect holiday gift.

During this workshop, each participant will make two reed stars (one large and one small) in contrasting colors.

Join us for a special weekend of holiday workshops as Shaker Village celebrates Christmas in July! It's never too early to get started on festive, handmade decorations. German stars, or Froebel stars, are classic 16-pointed stars made from folded paper. Traditionally dipped in wax and finished with a dusting of glitter, these stars can be personalized with colored paper or special patterns.

During this workshop, participants will learn to fold German stars and then be provided with a variety of different paper options to make 5-10 stars in various sizes.

: For the past year, Shaker Village has been utilizing small ruminants as a tool to manage brush encroachment on prairie plantings and control the spread of invasive species such as bush honeysuckle. Join members of Shaker Village's farm and preserve teams for an interactive introduction to sheep and goat grazing at the Village. The demonstration will begin with an opportunity to see the goats and sheep of Shaker Village at work on the preserve, followed by a presentation and discussion on rotational grazing strategies for small ruminants.

2026 Riparian Plants of the Kentucky River Hike

Join the Preserve team to learn about some of the plant species that grow in the riparian zone of the Kentucky River at Shaker Landing! Riparian (meaning "near flowing water") plants are tolerant of occasional flooding and are generally only found in areas that are consistently moist. Participants on this hike will learn about the ecology of riverine systems and how to identify plants like box elder (Acer negundo), spicebush (Lindera benzoin), river oats (Chasmanthium latifolium), and many more.
