Inspired: Shaker Gift Drawing Quilts
Temporary Exhibit: September 20 - January 1
Inspired by Shaker "gift drawings," Armatha Perkins’ eleven quilts capture the spirit of Shaker creativity. See them for a limited time, on display on the second floor of the iconic 1824-34 Centre Family Dwelling!
Finely detailed "gift drawings," originally created in the mid-1800s, contained symbolic motifs central to Shaker beliefs. Beautifully crafted, the drawings are joyful and often brightly colored.
Mrs. Perkins’ quilts employ a combination of techniques, including applique, embroidery, and quilting, to form the images originally portrayed in the Shaker drawings. Works of art in their own right, the quilts also provide a visual connection to the Shakers, demonstrating symbolism and bright colors used in the original Shaker gift drawings.
Quilters, art lovers, history buffs and all those who appreciate fine craftsmanship will be inspired by the connection of faith, art and tradition in this lovely exhibit.
Access to "Inspired: Shaker Gift Drawing Quilts" is included with your regular admission to Shaker Village, which also grants access to The Historic Centre, The Farm, The Preserve and a full schedule of interpretive programs and tours.
Exhibit hours are: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Sunday-Thursday + 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
