Join the Shaker Village Preserve Team to learn how to identify grassland songbirds by sight, sound, behavior and habitat. This program takes place during peak migration in our converted native prairie and adjoining forest edges. Participants will gain training for Global Big Day and other citizen-science birding programs.

$15 Per Person

  • This program will involve moderate walking/hiking on uneven surfaces in The Preserve at Shaker Village.
  • Recommended for ages 15+. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Grassland Birds of Shaker Village is being held as part of a partnership with Floracliff Nature Sanctuary to highlight birds of the Kentucky River Palisades region.

If you would like to also join us from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. for a morning birding hike at Floracliff that will feature woodland songbirds and migrating warblers, follow the link below!

Artisan Cynthia Main from Sunhouse Crafts will be hand making whisk and pot scrubber brooms. Join in on the fun and learn how these household helpers are made. Cynthia’s brooms are available for purchase at the Welcome Center.

Artisan Tonya Tate, founder of Nature’s Bath Soap, explains and displays the Cold Process Soap Making method, with a focus on her Gardener’s Scrub.

This Scrub combines cucumber, rosemary, lavender and other all-natural ingredients for ultimate cleaning and refreshing after digging in the dirt. Participants will observe multiple stages of Tonya’s soap making, and will each leave with a sliver of cured and ready-to-use soap.

Note that this is a demonstration-only session. Items made during the demonstration will be available for purchase.

Bats, Owls, Nocturnal, Night Hike

A completely different set of animals become active when dusk falls. Join us for an evening hike and discover the nocturnal animals that inhabit the prairie and forests of Pleasant Hill!

On this gentle hike through the Preserve we will learn about owls, bats, deer and other creatures that begin to emerge in the twilight and flourish in the darkness. Along the way, we will explore how these animals are especially suited to thrive in the nighttime environment.

Annual Passholder: FREE
Non-Annual Passholder: $5

The program will begin at sunset and continue until after dark. Participants should bring flashlights to assist in returning to vehicles or rooms at the conclusion of the evening.

To ensure the safety of our guests and staff all participants will be required to wear a mask. When gathered in a group masks must be worn, but when hiking they may be removed. Social distancing will also be enforced.
