This charming, swing-handled berry basket uses natural and smoked reed in contrasting stripes and is the perfect project for beginner weavers. Over the course of a day, our instructors will guide you through the fundamental techniques needed to create your very own functional heirloom. Are you up for the challenge?

Make your own holiday star this year!  Try your hand at weaving an intricate star pattern using reed, which can be replicated at home in a variety of sizes. Each participant will take home two reed stars (one large and one small) in contrasting colors.

All necessary materials are provided. No experience necessary and all levels encouraged.

Christmas ornaments at Shaker Village

Holiday decorations can be expensive, messy and harmful to the environment. In this workshop, we will learn to make beautiful, simple decorations using non-harmful materials you can find around your house and in your neighborhood. Join our workshop and learn how the Shakers celebrated Christmas, while you make your own fun, environmental and festive creations.

Adults and children of all ages will have fun learning about Shaker holiday traditions and making their own decorations to take home.

Owls are creatures that have fascinated humans for thousands of years. Hunting in our forests at night, owls are mysterious and rarely seen by human eyes.

Join us for an evening in the woods and learn all about these amazing animals. After dark, we will call—and listen—for owls in the surrounding trees!

Join us to learn a heritage craft that links us to a 200-year tradition of broom making at Pleasant Hill. In this workshop, you will begin by making smaller brushes and progress to creating a Turkey Wing (a hand-tied variation of a traditional flat broom). Learn to wrap, tie and finish hand-made brooms just like the Shakers.

All necessary materials are provided. No experience necessary and all levels are encouraged to join.

Monarch Butterflies, Butterfly Tagging

The annual monarch butterfly migration is one of the world's greatest natural wonders, yet it is threatened by habitat loss. Take an easy hike through the Preserve and learn how its wildflowers serve as important habitat for butterflies and other essential pollinators, then help tag monarchs to track and monitor their annual migration. We will also be on the lookout for other beautiful species of butterflies to observe and discuss. Along the way, we'll cover some pollinator-friendly plants that you can grow in your own yard.
