Civil War at Pleasant Hill

The Shaker celebration of Christmas has changed dramatically in the 200+ years the Shaker religion has existed in America. Together we will trace the evolution of Christmas celebrations in Shaker communities like Pleasant Hill and compare them to the contemporary interpretations of the holiday season.

The Shakers were committed pacifists but were unable to fully avoid the nation’s deadliest war. Soldiers camped in the village, marched on its roads on their way to the Perryville Battlefield and traded control of its vital ferry on the Kentucky River.

Take a stroll through the Village and learn about how the Civil War impacted Pleasant Hill in the 1860s – and for years to come!

Join our interpretive team for this "spirited" program that explores some of Pleasant Hill's darker and more macabre moments.

Your guided stroll will begin in front of the 1839 Trustees' Office, where lanterns will be distributed for those tours occurring after dark. As you walk along the historic turnpike, you will hear a selection of journal entries and stories by the Shakers of Pleasant Hill that will be sure to send a tingle down your spine.

Your journey will end at the 1811 Shaker Cemetery, where you will learn more about the burial traditions of this now-departed community.

Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill preserves more than 5,000 artifacts associated with the Pleasant Hill Shakers. Go behind the scenes with Shaker Village’s curator in this workshop to explore highlights from this unique collection.

Sericulture was an important part of the Pleasant Hill sisters' work, and they produced beautiful silk fabrics in vibrant colors. Learn the basics of silk cultivation, and view an assortment of garments and accessories that the Shakers produced from their silk.

This program is for ages 16 and up. If under age 18 you must be accompanied by a paying adult. The program will feature a curated selection of artifacts from the Shaker Village collection that are not otherwise on display. Due to occupancy limits and space restraints in our collections storage facility, the program will be held in one of Shaker Village’s historic buildings. Food or drink, pens, and bags will not be permitted in the program venue.

Program fee includes one complimentary admission to Shaker Village and one voucher for 20% off dining at the Trustees’ Table (excluding alcoholic beverages). Craft, Holidays, Reed Stars, DIY

Make your own holiday star this year!  Try your hand at weaving an intricate star pattern using reed, which can be replicated at home in a variety of sizes and materials. Each participant will take home two reed stars.

All necessary materials are provided. No experience necessary and all levels encouraged.
