What is the significance of the spring equinox?

During the equinox, both halves of the Earth are receiving the sun's rays equally. In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox officially brings winter to an end and kicks off spring!

The night sky and the cosmos have been a source of inspiration and amazement throughout human history. Join us for an evening at Pleasant Hill where we explore the starry sky and our nocturnal animals. On this gentle hike through the Preserve, take in the wonders of the prairie and forest at night while discovering some of the mysteries and curiosities of the universe. Along the way, we will listen to the enchanting sounds of the night, observe the night sky, and learn fun facts about the moon!

Participants should meet at the Welcome Center by 7:15 pm. All participants should bring flashlights to assist in returning to vehicles or rooms at the conclusion of the evening.

On this easy guided hike through the center of the Village, learn about some of these discoveries and explore how archaeology helps us understand more about the over 200 structures that no longer remain at Pleasant Hill.

Walk through millions of years of geologic time as you descend along the river road into the Kentucky River Palisades. Our guides will show how the geology of the region has shaped what we see above ground today.

It Takes a Village: Volunteer Work Day

Roll up your sleeves and lend a hand to help maintain the beauty of Shaker Village! Shaker Village staff will lead small teams of volunteers on a variety of outdoor beautification projects, including painting, staining and cleaning.

Work projects will total approximately six hours of the day. For guests ages 18 and up. Space is limited.

Delve into needlework with a Shaker cross stitch sampler! Young women in the 19^th century often stitched samplers as one of their first needlework projects, learning key sewing skills. We’ll take a close look at some original Shaker samplers in the Shaker Village Collection and learn about the sisters who worked them before beginning our own cross stitch projects.

All necessary materials are provided, including a kit to create a reproduction sampler. No experience necessary and all levels encouraged.
