Perforated Paper Cross Stitch Bookmarks
Saturday, September 2 | 1-5:00 p.m.
Explore perforated paper needlework – the art of doing embroidery on pre-punched paper sheets. This type of needlework was extremely popular for those living in the second half of the 1800s, and the Shakers were no exception. At Pleasant Hill, young sisters even created beautiful bookmarks to give as gifts to fellow community members.
Shaker needlework and cross stitch traditions will be discussed broadly; then, participants will take a close look at some original bookmarks and other embroidered materials from the Shaker Village collection. Due to their fragility, these items are seldom on display – this is a rare opportunity to view them. Participants will then begin on their own bookmarks. Participants will receive a kit with all necessary materials to create 2-3 bookmarks inspired by examples from the Shaker Village collection. No experience necessary and all levels encouraged.
