Regifted: The Gift of Shaker Music
Saturday, August 8, 2026 | 3:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
The Shakers created a rich musical tradition rooted in faith, community and creativity. Today, that tradition continues to inspire musicians, composers and audiences alike.
Join us for a special afternoon of music as Kentucky artists breathe new life into Shaker melodies through contemporary instrumental and choral arrangements. Curated by arranger Paula Cooper Matthews, Regifted: The Gift of Shaker Music explores how these historic songs continue to resonate across generations.
The program features newly arranged works inspired by Shaker hymns, including music connected to Pleasant Hill Shakers Polly M. Rupe, Jane Sutton and Hortency Hooser. The program includes 10 instrumental pieces and two choral works, performed by a small ensemble of instrumentalists and singers. Together, these pieces honor the spirit of the original music while inviting listeners to experience it in fresh and unexpected ways.
Audience members will also have the opportunity to join in during select choral pieces, becoming part of the living tradition of Shaker music.
Whether you are discovering Shaker music for the first time or returning to melodies you have long cherished, this unique performance offers an opportunity to connect with the enduring legacy of the Pleasant Hill Shakers through the universal language of music.
This event will be held in the 1820 Meeting House, located within the Historic Center at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. Participants should be comfortable navigating the entrance stairs to the Meeting House and sitting for the duration of the program. Pets are not permitted.
Your ticket includes daily admission to Shaker Village on the day of the performance, allowing you to explore the historic buildings, exhibits and grounds before the event.
As a special keepsake, each attendee will receive a commemorative copy of the sheet music featured during the performance.
