Regifted: The Gift of Shaker Music
Saturday, August 8, 2026 | 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The Shakers created a rich musical tradition rooted in faith, community and creativity. Today, that tradition continues to inspire musicians, composers and audiences alike.
Join us for a special afternoon of music as multi-talented Kentucky artists breathe new life into Shaker melodies through contemporary instrumental and choral arrangements. Curated by arranger Paula Cooper Matthews, Regifted: The Gift of Shaker Music honors these historic songs creatively arranged to enhance their usage for future generations.
The program features newly arranged works inspired by Shaker hymns, including music composed by Pleasant Hill Shakers Polly M. Rupe, Jane Sutton and Hortency Hooser. The program includes 10 instrumental pieces and two choral works, performed by an ensemble of instrumentalists and singers. Together, these pieces introduce the original melodies while inviting listeners to experience them in a fresh, new way with the combination of 8 different instruments and choral harmonies.
Audience members will also have the opportunity to join in during select choral pieces, becoming a new part of the living tradition of Shaker music.
Whether you are new to Shaker music or returning to long-cherished melodies, this premier performance offers a beautiful way to connect with the enduring legacy of the Pleasant Hill Shakers through the universal language of music.
As a special keepsake, each attendee will receive a copy of the newly published book, The Gift of Shaker Music, containing songs featured during the performance.
