Blackjack Oak
The Blackjack Oak is a small-sized deciduous tree that grows where many trees won’t. It's found frequently on thin, dry, sterile soil along ridges and eroded hills. The species occurs in all regions of Kentucky except the Bluegrass.
Like some other oaks, it holds onto its dead leaves through winter; this phenomenon is known as marcescence.
