2026 Elements of Photography: Shaker Still Life

Saturday, August 8, 2026 | 10:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Shaker Boxes and Torn Sifter

Lexington photographer Carol Peachee has photographed Pleasant Hill for more than four decades, capturing unique and intimate views of this iconic Shaker community. In 2024, her work was published by The University Press of Kentucky as Shaker Made: Inside Pleasant Hill's Shaker Village. Join Carol at Shaker Village for a special series of hands-on photography workshops in 2026.

For our final photography workshop of 2026, we're moving indoors, taking a closer look at the minutiae of Shaker daily life. With Carol's guidance, participants will experiment with still life photography, creating assemblages and staged compositions using an assortment of reproduction Shaker objects. During the afternoon portion of the workshop, participants will also have exclusive access to several of Shaker Village's exhibits and the opportunity to photograph the artifacts on display with the supervision and support of Shaker Village's curatorial team.

General Admission: $90

Join Carol at Shaker Village for a special series of hands-on photography workshops in 2026.

The Shakers of Pleasant Hill cultivated extensive gardens, planted trees, erected stone fences, and left their imprint on the central Kentucky landscape. Today, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill continues this rich agricultural tradition through our modern, working farm. Participants will explore Shaker Village's rich natural and cultural landscapes under Carol's direction, learning to compose the perfect photograph of the great outdoors.

The Bucolics Project at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill

Date: April 26, 2026
Time: 2:04 pm  to  4:30 pm

2026 The Bucolics Project at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill

Sunday, April 26, 2026 | 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Bucolics dulcimer closeup

Born out of a ten-year collaboration between Kentucky poet Maurice Manning and Vermont composer Brendan Taaffe, The Bucolics Project reimagines Manning’s award-winning 2007 collection Bucolics as song. Each song is based on an archival recording of Eastern Kentucky singers like Addie Graham, Roscoe Holcomb, and Old Regular Baptist congregations. Manning rewrote the original poems to match the metrical structure of these source recordings and Taaffe then changed the music, resulting in songs that are based in tradition but also offer a renewal.

Performed by an all-star cast including Sarah Kate Morgan, Erin Shea Hogan, Sarah Gibson, Stefan Amidon, and Brendan Taaffe, The Bucolics Project encompasses ballads, hymns and fiddle tunes along with spoken word by Maurice and a ‘crankie’ (also known as a moving panorama, a crankie is an illustrated scroll cranked from one side to the other in a wooden puppet theater).

Creation of The Bucolics Project was made possible in part by a Research Fellowship from the Appalachian Sound Archives at Berea College and by a Creation Grant from the Vermont Arts Council.

This event will be held in the 1820 Meeting House located within the Village Center. Your ticket to the event provides daily admission to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill.
