Pleasant Hill & the Battle of Perryville

Date: October 8, 2026

2026 Pleasant Hill & the Battle of Perryville

Thursday, October 8, 2026 | 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Battle of Perryville

On October 8, 1862, the Pleasant Hill Shakers listened fearfully to the booming of cannons and other sounds of battle. Seventeen miles away, near the small community of Perryville, more than 20,000 Union and Confederate forces were locked in a pivotal battle. For the pacifist Shakers, the fall of 1862 was a particularly troubling time - soldiers marched through the community both before and after the battle, begged for food from the kitchens, camped in the surrounding fields, and stole the Shakers' horses.

Join us for an evening stroll on the 164rd anniversary of the Battle of Perryville as we explore the many ways that this battle impacted the Pleasant Hill Shakers.

About the Play
This year’s International Cackler’s Convention, is filled with the typical assortment of lectures, presentations, and panels, but the event that’s got the crowd spellbound is a workshop titled: How to Conjure a Husband. Finding love as a witch isn’t easy, but the Peridot sisters (Amber, Jade, Ruby and Citrine) have crafted a brew that’s guaranteed to do the trick. They’re so proud of their potion, they plan to conjure their husbands in a live demonstration, but when something goes wrong and only one man emerges, the bonds of sisterhood are strained by that old adage: all is fair in love and war… and what better way to win a groom than by eliminating the competition?

Matinee Tickets: $35
Evening Tickets: $45
Evening Tickets & Dinner: $80

October 2 | 6:30pm
October 3 | 3:00pm
October 3 | 6:30pm
October 4 | 3:00pm

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to showtime at our Meadow View Barn. Event tickets will not be mailed in advance. A cash bar and concessions will be available. Seating is first-come, first-served.

Regifted: The Gift of Shaker Music

Saturday, August 8, 2026 | 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
MH Interior 2
Meeting House

The Shakers created a rich musical tradition rooted in faith, community and creativity. Today, that tradition continues to inspire musicians, composers and audiences alike.

Join us for a special afternoon of music as multi-talented Kentucky artists breathe new life into Shaker melodies through contemporary instrumental and choral arrangements. Curated by arranger Paula Cooper Matthews, Regifted: The Gift of Shaker Music honors these historic songs creatively arranged to enhance their usage for future generations.

The program features newly arranged works inspired by Shaker hymns, including music composed by Pleasant Hill Shakers Polly M. Rupe, Jane Sutton and Hortency Hooser. The program includes 10 instrumental pieces and two choral works, performed by an ensemble of instrumentalists and singers. Together, these pieces introduce the original melodies while inviting listeners to experience them in a fresh, new way with the combination of 8 different instruments and choral harmonies.

Audience members will also have the opportunity to join in during select choral pieces, becoming a new part of the living tradition of Shaker music.

Whether you are new to Shaker music or returning to long-cherished melodies, this premier performance offers a beautiful way to connect with the enduring legacy of the Pleasant Hill Shakers through the universal language of music.

As a special keepsake, each attendee will receive a copy of the newly published book, The Gift of Shaker Music, containing songs featured during the performance.

This event will be held in the 1820 Meeting House, located within the Historic Center at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. Participants should be comfortable navigating the entrance stairs to the Meeting House and sitting for the duration of the program. Pets are not permitted.

Your ticket includes daily admission to Shaker Village on the day of the performance, allowing you to explore the historic buildings, exhibits and grounds before the event.
