For the Shakers, temptation and sin lurked just around the corner! We'll take a special stroll through some of our historic buildings as we share stories about the naughtier side of life at Pleasant Hill.

A Midsummer Night’s Solstice

Date: June 20, 2025
Time: 8:00 pm  to  10:00 pm

2025 A Midsummer Night's Solstice

Friday, June 20, 2025 | 8:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Firefly, Lightning bugs, hike, night hike
West Lot

Summer solstice, or Midsummer, marks the longest day of the year, a time to reflect on the abundance of nature, the power of the sun, and the cycles that sustain life on Earth. For generations, peoples around the world have celebrated this day in a myriad of ways. Midsummer has always been an especially important holiday in Scandinavia.

At Pleasant Hill, over one hundred Swedish converts joined the Shakers in the late 1860s and early 1870s, bringing new cultural traditions to the already-diverse community. It's likely that they would have found new ways to celebrate Midsummer and to incorporate their existing beliefs into their new faith. Join us as we honor the legacy of Pleasant Hill's Swedish Shakers with traditional Midsummer activities like making greenery wreaths, searching for flowers, and sharing songs and a lively "frog dance." As the sun sets on this special day, we will gather around a bonfire and roast marshmallows whilst sharing stories and traditions of Summer Solstice.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner to enjoy by the fire - we'll provide the marshmallows for dessert!

General Admission: $25
