2025 Celestial Company: A Journey to Holy Sinai's Plain

During the “Era of Manifestations” in the 1830s and 1840s, the Shakers rediscovered the religious fervor that had characterized their earliest years in America. This outpouring of spiritual gifts – including thousands of new hymns and “gift” songs – enriched and energized life at Pleasant Hill, suffusing the whole community with the feeling of divine presence. Religious services expanded beyond the physical walls of the Meeting House to include new sacred spaces throughout the community, as well as new forms of worship. On September 26, 1844, the Shakers held their first religious service at “Holy Sinai’s Plain,” an outdoor worship space located south of the village.

Now, almost exactly 181 years later, join us for a special guided experience, including performances of Shaker music and readings from historic documents, as we follow in the Shakers’ footsteps and journey to Holy Sinai’s Plain.

Pleasant Hill & the Battle of Perryville: War Comes to Zion

Date: October 8, 2025
Time: 7:00 pm  to  8:00 pm

2025 Pleasant Hill & the Battle of Perryville: War Comes to Zion

Wednesday, October 8, 2025 | 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Battle of Perryville

On October 8, 1862, the Pleasant Hill Shakers listened fearfully to the booming of cannons and other sounds of battle. Seventeen miles away, near the small community of Perryville, more than 20,000 Union and Confederate forces were locked in a pivotal battle. For the pacifist Shakers, the fall of 1862 was a particularly troubling time - soldiers marched through the community both before and after the battle, begged for food from the kitchens, camped in the surrounding fields, and stole the Shakers' horses. In the aftermath of the battle, one distraught Shaker diarist noted: "How awful to think of a wicked and bloody battle occurring in the midst of Zion on earth!"

Join us on an evening stroll through the Village on the 163rd anniversary of the Battle of Perryville as we explore the many ways that this battle impacted the Pleasant Hill Shakers.
