Kids Science

Join us on the second Saturday of each month for activities the whole family can enjoy! Your Village admission ticket will allow you to participate in all the activities. Plus, save 50% on kids meals at The Trustees' Table and 20% off on kids merchandise in the Shops.

Discover the Shaker experience in new and exciting ways. Family Fun Days feature engaging activities for children and adults as well as guided tours, demonstrations and more. Have fun with the entire family by spending the day with us.

This month the Shaker Village staff will be leading activities and tours to connect kids of all ages to the incredible architecture and historic preservation at Pleasant Hill. Enjoy an activity station with building materials to touch and examine, a Meeting House model craft, family-focused tours and an architectural scavenger hunt.

Kids' Science Projects
Join us outside of the Welcome Center to learn fun, hands-on activities. In May, kids will learn about the chemistry of preservation by exploring resin. We'll also take a look at the geology of building materials with a look into limestone and clay deposits on bricks.


All ages welcome, children must be accompanied by an adult. Check-in and pay admission at the Welcome Center. Dining and shopping discounts only apply with purchase of an Admission ticket.

Join us in the Preserve as we photograph beautiful plant buds bursting out this spring! We’ll be participating in a community science project called Project Budburst (Phenology and Climate) that helps us understand the timing of plant life-cycles. Participants will use their smartphones to take images and upload them to the project app. All ages are welcome to participate.

Participants should meet at the Welcome Center by 12:30 p.m. Guests will then drive to the parking lot by the Centre Trailhead.

Each Fresh Food Adventure has an all-inclusive fixed dinner and spirits menu. Please communicate any special dietary restrictions in advance. Availability is limited and advanced registration and non-refundable prepayment required.


Additional Information:
Fresh Food Adventures are communal dining experiences, and guests should expect to share their table with other dining enthusiasts.

Parties wishing to sit together and guests with special dietary considerations should email [email protected] at least one week in advance to ensure accommodations.

Please follow on-site directional signage to event location and plan on checking in 15 minutes prior to the event start time. Event tickets will not be mailed in advance.

Extend your visit with an overnight stay! Attendees to Fresh Food Adventures will receive a promotional code for a discounted room rate the night of your event.

Join us for an evening of live music, cocktails and a multi-course dinner celebrating the best of Eastern Kentucky. The Meadowview Barn will be filled with music from renowned bluegrass group, the McLain Family Band. Cocktails will be enjoyed before sitting down to an Appalachian-inspired dinner curated by Shaker Village Chef Amber Hokams (scroll down to view the menu). After dinner guests can enjoy drinks and dancing.

About the McLain Family Band
Celebrating their 55th anniversary, the McLain Family Band have become internationally known as one of the most spontaneous, creative and spirited groups performing original and traditional bluegrass music. Hailing from Eastern Kentucky’s Appalachian Mountains, they have appeared at Carnegie Hall, The Metropolitan Museum, The Kennedy Center, The Lincoln Center, Chicago's Orchestra Hall, and the Grand Ole Opry.

Join us in the Welcome Center, to meet Lexington, Ky based writer Terry Foody, author of The Pie Seller, the Drunk and the Lady: Heroes of the1833 Cholera Epidemic in Lexington, Kentucky. Foody will be on hand to sign copies of her latest book which will be the focus of our March Reading Retreat. Copies of the book will be available for purchase onsite.

About the Author: Terry Foody, RN, MSN is a graduate of Niagara University, NY and of the University of Kentucky.  She is the author of two books: The Pie Seller, the Drunk and the Lady: Heroes of the1833 Cholera Epidemic in Lexington, Kentucky, and The Cherokee and the Newsman: Kinsmen in Words. Most Recently, she was Historical Consultant for the AthensWest Production Limestone: 1833. As a speaker for the Kentucky Humanities and other groups, she brings her extensive research, fascinating characters, and personal perspective to audiences near and far.
