Birds of the Palisades

Join our Preserve Team to learn how to identify grassland songbirds by sight, sound, behavior and habitat. This program takes place during peak migration in our converted native prairie and adjoining forest edges. Participants will gain training for Global Big Day and other citizen science birding programs.

For this program, we are partnering with our friends at Floracliff Nature Sanctuary to highlight birds of the Kentucky River Palisades region.

Please dress for a day of warm-weather hiking with sturdy shoes. We encourage you to bring sun protection, water, light snacks and binoculars. Participants should meet at the Welcome Center 15 minutes before the start of the program. Adult supervision is required for anyone under 18.

Spring Hike

Join one of Shaker Village's environmental educators for this unique opportunity to enjoy the spring sunset and the ensuing night sky. While we hike, we will keep our eyes peeled for elusive crepuscular creatures going about their evening routines.

Annual Passholder: $15

Participants should meet at the Welcome Center 15 minutes before the start of the hike. All participants should bring flashlights to assist in returning to vehicles or rooms at the conclusion of the evening. This hike is for ages 12+. If under 18, guests must be accompanied by a ticketed adult.

This 6-hour workshop is designed to accommodate the needs of both beginner and intermediate watercolor painters. Charley's easy, humor-filled, low-key approach is perfect for kindling your own interest for painting. All supplies are provided, just bring your passion and willingness to learn!

It is hard to paint in Kentucky without encountering trees! This workshop introduces particpants to varied tree forms - from skeletal trees in winter to trees lush with summer foliage. Participants will explore techniques to accuately capture the essence of different types of trees and discuss the compositional importance of trees.

Workshop Price (includes a boxed lunch):

Shaker Village is home to one of Kentucky's largest and most accessible collections of historic, dry stacked stone fences. You are invited to join the Drystone Conservancy for this two-day workshop to learn how to care for and repair these remarkable pieces of Kentucky culture. 

Learn More and Register

Introductory Workshops through the Drystone Conservancy are designed for drystone enthusiasts with little to no previous experience who would like to gain a basic understanding of dry stone construction techniques. The pace will be comfortable and participants will learn the fundamental skills needed to build and repair a typical rock fence or retaining wall.
