Spark! Exhibit

Exhibit Opening Reception
Saturday, March 2 | 5:00 p.m. | Centre Family Dwelling

Spark! Places of Innovation explores the unique combination of places, people, and circumstances that sparks innovation and invention in rural communities. Inspired by an exhibition by the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, this traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street program features stories gathered from diverse communities across the nation. The Shakers, too, were innovators and creators, famous for producing flat brooms, seed packets, and other items that generated revenue for their flourishing communal settlements. Artifacts and stories about the Shakers' innovations will be integrated into Spark! during this special, month-long exhibition at Shaker Village.

Join us for Shaker Village's grand opening of Spark! Places of Innovation and explore innovation from both a contemporary and historical perspective. Following a reception and introduction, Shaker Village staff will provide guided tours through the exhibit.

Appetizers and beverages are included, and a cash bar will be available.

Cross Stitch Shaker Samplers – Sold Out

Date: March 9, 2024
Time: 1:44 pm  to  5:44 pm

2024 Cross Stitch Shaker Samplers

Saturday, March 9, 2024 | 1-5:00 p.m.
Cross Stitch Samplers

Delve into needlework with a Shaker cross stitch sampler! Young women in the 19th century often stitched samplers as one of their first needlework projects, learning key sewing skills. We’ll discuss Shaker samplers broadly and then take a close look at some original Shaker samplers in the Shaker Village collection. Due to their fragility, these samplers are seldom on display – this is a rare opportunity to view them. Participants will then begin on their own samplers, working a reproduction inspired by a sampler made by Pleasant Hill's Mary Ann Downing in 1844.

All participants will receive a kit with all necessary materials (including embroidery hoop, needle, fabric, floss, and sampler chart). Two fabric choices will be offered: 32 count linen or 16 count Aida (fabric choice not guaranteed after February 23, 2024).

Participants should have a basic understanding of cross stitch, other embroidery techniques, or sewing.

Fashion

Fashion

Saturday, May 18 | 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Despite the Shakers' reputation for plainness and simplicity, Shaker sisters (and brethren) often took special care in their dressing and deportment. Some sisters owned elegant silk slippers and boldly colored neckerchiefs, while others trimmed bonnets in delicately rouched silk or knit wristlets with decorative patterns. We'll explore some of the myths about Shaker simplicity of dress while looking at items of personal adornment once owned by individual Shakers and considering the world of "Shaker fashion."
