Take on the challenging project of making a Kentucky Berry Basket in a day! Learn the art of weaving using natural reed to make a basket that is perfect for storing odds and ends or for trips to the local farmer’s market.

Shaker Rugs

Shaker Village has the world's largest collection of Kentucky Shaker rugs and carpeting. Learn about the Shaker sisters’ robust textile industry in the 19th century and the beautiful rugs they created using recycled and reused materials. Discover some of the challenges in caring for historic textiles, and gain practical tips about textile preservation that can be applied to your own family heirlooms.

Hymnody was a key part of Shaker life and musical composition was an approved outlet for members' creative expression. In all, the Shakers composed upwards of 10,000 songs. Explore original manuscript hymnals from the Pleasant Hill collection and learn about the Shakers' musical practices. Hear examples of lesser-known songs composed at Pleasant Hill performed by a Shaker Village Music Interpreter.

Religious worship and spiritual practice was a central part of life for the Pleasant Hill Shakers. View items from the Shaker Village archival collection that relate to their spiritual beliefs and practices, including spiritual journals, theological tracts and membership records.

Shaker Silk

Sericulture was an important part of the Pleasant Hill sisters' work, and they produced beautiful silk fabrics in vibrant colors. Learn the basics of silk cultivation, and view an assortment of garments and accessories that the Shakers produced from their silk.

This program is for ages 16 and up. If under age 18 you must be accompanied by a paying adult. The program will feature a curated selection of artifacts from the Shaker Village collection that are not otherwise on display. Due to occupancy limits and space restraints in our collections storage facility, the program will be held in one of Shaker Village’s historic buildings. Food or drink, pens, and bags will not be permitted in the program venue.

Join us to learn a heritage craft that links us to a 200-year tradition of broom making at Pleasant Hill. In this workshop you will begin by making smaller brushes and progress to creating a Turkey Wing broom (a hand-tied variation of a traditional flat broom). Learn to wrap, tie and finish hand-made brooms just like the Shakers did.

All necessary materials are provided. No experience necessary and all levels are encouraged to join.

The Shakers grew, prepared and sold herbs for many purposes across the country. Learn about varieties of herbs and how they can be used to make all natural products for your home and body.

This workshop includes discussion and demonstration of the basic steps for making environmentally green cleaners, teas and more. Make several of your own products to take home or give as gifts.

Each fall, hundreds of millions of monarch butterflies migrate from the United States to warmer regions in Mexico and California. The monarch migration is one of the world's greatest natural wonders, yet it is threatened by habitat loss.

Take an easy hike through The Preserve and learn how its wildflowers serve as an important habitat for butterflies and other essential pollinators, then help tag monarchs to track and monitor their annual migration. Along the way, discuss plants you can grow in your own yard to help save the monarchs.
