Using the simplest of mediums - paper - we'll create beautiful handmade ornaments and decorations perfect of the holiday season. You'll learn how to take vintage sheet music, or other types of paper, and transform it into folded flowers and elaborate rosette decorations.

During this workshop, each participant will make an assortment of "flower" ornaments in several sizes, along with a
large rosette or wreath.

Annual Passholder: $45
General Admission: $50

No prior experience necessary, but guests should be aware that making paper ornaments involves visual acuity, fine-motor control, and working with hot glue.

Vintage Paper Creations is intended for participants aged 12+. All minors must be accompanied by a ticketed adult.

Join us for an afternoon of dipping beeswax candles as we explore historic methods of light and illumination. During Pleasant Hill's heyday, the Shakers cultivated dozens of beehives, valueing the bees both for their important role as pollinators and for their production of honey and wax. We'll discuss Shaker Village's continuation of this long tradition, including sampling some honey from our hives, before making our own candles over an open fire.

No experience necessary. Guests should be aware that this workshop involves standing/walking, the ability to hold and grip materials, and exposure to smoke. This workshop is for ages 14+. All minors must be accompanied by a ticketed adult.

The annual Perseids meteor shower is a wonderful time to enjoy a relaxing evening of stargazing at Shaker Village! We’ll start with a short hike into the Preserve – all in search of the perfect stargazing location. We’ll then have blankets for you to spread out on the grass and light refreshments for you to enjoy as we discuss summer constellations and the phenomenon of meteor showers. Don’t forget to make a wish on your first “shooting star.”

Annual Passholder: $15
General Admission: $25

This program will take place outdoors and is subject to cancellation in case of inclement weather or heavy cloud cover. If cancellation is necessary, Shaker Village will contact all registered guests.

Participants will traverse gravel, grass, and dirt pathways on a 1.0-2.0 mile loop along Shaker Village's trails. Participants should be comfortable walking in low light/semi-dark conditions.

This program is intended for all ages. All minors must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Tickets required for guests aged 5+.

Join Shaker Village as we get ready for the holidays! Learn to assemble fresh cut greenery into festive swags. We'll have natural elements like pinecones and honey locust pods available to decorate your greenery swags, and will share tips and tricks to make beautiful ribbon bows. Hot chocolate and a warming fire will make this the perfect start to the holiday season.

In addition to making a swag to take home, attendees will be encouraged to make an extra swag used for decorating Shaker Village's Historic Centre.

No experience or tools necessary, but guests should be aware that this program involves securely holding and gripping materials. Holiday Greenery helpers is intended for ages 8+. All minors must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Tickets required for guests aged 5+. Holiday Greenery Helpers takes place rain or shine, and is primarily based outdoors.

Cross Stitch Shaker Samplers

Delve into needlework with a Shaker cross stitch sampler! Young women in the 19th century often stitched samplers as one of their first needlework projects, learning key sewing skills. We’ll discuss Shaker samplers broadly and then take a close look at some original Shaker samplers in the Shaker Village collection. Due to their fragility, these samplers are seldom on display – this is a rare opportunity to view them. Participants will then begin on their own samplers, working a reproduction of Shaker Village’s Elizabeth Spaulding/Mary Ann Ewing sampler.

All participants will receive a kit with all necessary materials (including embroidery hoop, needle, fabric, floss, and sampler chart). Two fabric choices will be offered: 32 count linen or 16 count Aida (fabric choice not guaranteed after February 15, 2025).

While the Shakers strove to create an earthly paradise, they could not escape the realities of human life—disease, violence, and death were present at every stage of Pleasant Hill’s history. We'll explore the darker side of the Village with a lantern-lit walk to the cemetery, stopping along the way for surprising tales of everything from headless corpses to violent feuds.

Join us for an evening you won’t soon forget—just don’t let your candle go out.

This program deals with mature themes including illness, injury, murder, and grief. Spirit Strolls is intended for ages 16+. All minors must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Tickets required for guests aged 5+.

This program will take place outdoors throughout the Historic Centre. Participants will traverse crushed stone, gravel, and grass on a one mile round-trip. The program will proceed rain or shine, although the route may be modified in case of inclement weather. Participants should be comfortable walking in low light/semi-dark conditions.
