Historically, the Pleasant Hill Shakers were known for their quality flat brooms, manufactured by the thousand and sold across the midwestern United States. In this workshop, we're returning to the folk art tradition of broommaking that originally inspired the Shakers, making our own hand-tied brooms without special machinery or equipment. Our "turkey wing" brooms, made of hemp cord and natural broomcorn, are as decorative as they are useful.

All necessary materials are provided. No experience necessary and all levels are encouraged to join.

This workshop is recommended for ages 14 and up. All minors must be accompanied by a paid adult.

What is the significance of the spring equinox?

During the equinox, both halves of the Earth are receiving the sun's rays equally. In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox officially brings winter to an end and kicks off spring!

Spring has officially arrived! On March 20th, the vernal equinox – when the earth’s axis is aligned with the sun and day and night are approximately the same length – marked the beginning of spring. Join us to celebrate the changing of the seasons with this relaxing twilight hike through the Preserve. We’ll be on the lookout for crepuscular creatures (those most active in twilight) and some of the first signs of spring.

Weather permitting, the Spring Equinox Hike will end with fellowship and light refreshments at Shaker Village's Amphitheatre.

This hike will take place outdoors, rain or shine. Participants will traverse gravel, grass, and dirt pathways on a 1.5-3.0 mile loop along Shaker Village's trails. Participants should be comfortable walking in low light/semi-dark conditions.

The Spring Equinox is intended for ages 12+. All minors must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Tickets required for guests aged 5+.

Participants should meet at the Welcome Center at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the program. All participants should bring flashlights to assist in returning to vehicles or rooms at the conclusion of the evening.

Whoo's out on the Preserve tonight? Six different species of owls call Kentucky home, and Shaker Village's mixed woodland and prairie ecology is perfect habitat for these winged predators. We'll be using all our senses as we search for these elusive creatures on this evening hike, listening closely to see if any owls are vocalizing nearby.

Weather permitting, Owl Prowl will end with fellowship and light refreshments at Shaker Village's Amphitheatre.

Winter Kitchen Fire

For the Shakers, temptation and sin lurked just around the corner! A plethora of rules governed all aspects of life in the community - from when brethren and sisters could meet socially to what foods were acceptable on the dinner table. We'll begin the evening with some forbidden foods - including a Shaker Village signature cocktail - and then take a special stroll through some of our historic buildings as we share stories about the naughtier side of life at Pleasant Hill.

Due to the inclusion of alcoholic beverages, this program is intended for participants aged 21+. This program will traverse approximately 0.5 mile of graveled, level terrain and will climb and descend several flights of stairs. Participants should be comfortable walking and navigating stairs in low light/semi-dark conditions. The program will proceed rain or shine, although the route may be modified in case of inclement weather.

This program deals with mature themes including addiction, intoxication, and sexuality; it is not suitable for young children.

In this workshop, we're returning to the craft tradition of broommaking that originally inspired the Shakers, making our own hand-tied brooms without special machinery or equipment. Our symmetrical "hawk tail" brooms are made of hemp cord and natural broomcorn, the same materials once used by the Shakers. We are then adding patterned, woven reed handles to our brooms, creating a beautiful piece of Shaker-inspired folk art.

All necessary materials are provided. No experience necessary and all levels are encouraged to join.

For much of the year, Shaker Village's mill sites, quarries, and stone fences are obscured by foliage, hidden behind a screen of leafy green in the Preserve. Late winter is the perfect time to trace the footprints of the Shakers, exploring the cultural landscape that they painstakingly shaped for over 100 years. Join us for a journey of discovery along the Heritage Trail, followed by a warming bonfire and lively discussion.
