Shaker Village is home to one of Kentucky's largest and most accessible collections of historic, dry stacked stone fences. You are invited to join the Drystone Conservancy for this two-day workshop to learn how to care for and repair these remarkable pieces of Kentucky culture.

Introductory Workshops through the Drystone Conservancy are designed for drystone enthusiasts with little to no previous experience who would like to gain a basic understanding of dry stone construction techniques. The pace will be comfortable and participants will learn the fundamental skills needed to build and repair a typical rock fence or retaining wall.

Program fee includes one complimentary admission to Shaker Village and one voucher redeemable for 20% off dining at The Trustees’ Table (excluding alcoholic beverages). Dining reservations recommended to assure availability: call 859.734.5411.

Using our senses, we'll explore the many plants and animals that call Shaker Village home, discovering how they fit together into a diverse ecosystem on a short hike (approximately 1 mile). We'll especially be on the lookout for any animal tracks that might tell us more about our non-human neighbors.

Lots of macroinvertebrates - from snails to crayfish - live in Shawnee Run Creek. We'll meet some of these small creatures and learn about their habitat while also having some watery creekside fun.

Are you looking for a unique experience to share with your special someone (or friends) this Valentine's Day?! Expert cookie designer Jillian Mora, owner of A Traveling Cupcake, is here
to help!

In this two-hour class, you'll learn the basics of decorating pre-baked sugar cookies and receive Jillian's royal icing and cookie recipe, all while enjoying a special Valentine's Day cocktail in one of Shaker Village's beautifully restored historic buildings. Everything you need is provided in the class, and each participant will receive personal instruction from Jillian.

You'll leave the class with a great understanding of the basics of cookie decorating, plus a few cool techniques you'll be sure to use for every special occasion. Most importantly, you'll have a lot of Valentine's Day fun!

Participants must be aged 21+. Tickets required for all attendees.

Cross Stitch Shaker Samplers

Delve into needlework with a Shaker cross stitch sampler! Young women in the 19th century often stitched samplers as one of their first needlework projects, learning key sewing skills. We’ll discuss Shaker samplers broadly and then take a close look at some original Shaker samplers in the Shaker Village collection. Due to their fragility, these samplers are seldom on display – this is a rare opportunity to view them. Participants will then begin on their own samplers, working a reproduction of Shaker Village's Diana Banta sampler.

All participants will receive a kit with all necessary materials (including embroidery hoop, needle, fabric, floss, and sampler chart). Two fabric choices will be offered: white 32 count linen evenweave fabric or white 16 count cotton Aida fabric (fabric choice not guaranteed for registrations made after April 16. Participants should have a basic understanding of cross stitch.

Bats are fascinating creatures and an essential part of our ecosystem, and yet they remain one of our most misunderstood mammals. Join us for a nighttime stroll through the fields and forests of Pleasant Hill as we dispel myths and learn about their habitat and food needs. We'll even have special acoustic "bat boxes" to listen in on the local bat population as they use ultrasonic squeaks to navigate their environment.

General Admission: $25

This hike will take place outdoors, rain or shine. Participants will traverse gravel, grass, and dirt pathways on a 1.5-2.0 mile loop along Shaker Village's trails and throughout the Historic Centre. Participants should be comfortable walking in low light/semi-dark conditions. Participants may wish to bring a flashlight/headlamp, insect repellant and water.

Going Batty! is intended for ages 16+. Tickets required for all attendees. Dogs are not permitted.
