Looking for ways to explore science with your kids? Join us for Kids Science Saturdays to learn fun, hands-on activities that you can take home to enjoy with the whole family.

Highlights will include: Making your own tornado, learning to identify different rocks and minerals, discovering how to tell time with a lemon, experiments with mason jars and more!

Kids Science Saturdays take place outside the Welcome Center, and participation is included with Admission to Shaker Village.

Are you Batty for Bats? Do you want to discover more about these endearing nocturnal mammals? Come and join us on this guided walk where we hope to meet some of the bats who make Shaker Village’s Preserve their home. On a leisurely walk through the Preserve we’ll listen for and identify common Kentucky bat species using acoustic devices. We’ll also discuss the bats' habitat and food needs, along with the conservation challenges we face today. Weather permitting, our evening will conclude at Shaker Village’s Amphitheatre where we will enjoy a bat-related discussion around the fire.

Participants should check in with the guide at the Welcome Center at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the program. All participants should bring flashlights to assist in returning to vehicles or rooms at the conclusion of the evening.

Explore the musical traditions of the Pleasant Hill Shakers during this special September weekend. The Shakers wrote more than 10,000 songs, and music was a central component of their religious worship. Join us in exploring the many intersections between music, creativity, and religious practice.

Shaker Music and Dance

Friday, September 6

11:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m. – Shaker Music: Join us for a live performance of Shaker music in the 1820 Meeting House as we explore the connections between song and spirituality. Included with general admission.

7:00-10:00 p.m. – Contra Dance: Enjoy an evening of dance in our 1820 Meeting House! Contra dance is a beginner-friendly form of social dance that is non-competitive and perfect for families. No partner or experience necessary – an orientation session for beginners will be offered from 7:00-7:30 p.m. Calling by Jerome Grisanti and music by Tom Cunningham and The Cat Came Back. Admission by donation, with all proceeds supporting Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill.

Shaker Village will be hosting special tours and our seventh annual community sing, included with daily admission and in addition to our other Daily Adventures.

10:00-11:30 a.m.- Celestial Company: A Journey to Holy Sinai’s Plain: Enjoy a leisurely hike to the Shakers’ outdoor worship space, Holy Sinai’s Plain, interspersed with 1840s music and readings. Separate ticket required, register here.

11:00 a.m. – Top to Bottom: Explore the Shakers’ 1820 Meeting House from the foundation to the attic and learn how this innovative building was designed and engineered to support the Shakers’ inclusion of music and dance in their religious worship. Included with general admission.

1:00-2:00 p.m. – Community Sing: Join us in lifting our voices together as part of the seventh annual Shaker Village Community Sing. Curated from the Shakers’ rich musical legacy of 10,000+ songs, selections will include “sing-alongs” that encourage audience participation as well as performances by Shaker Village’s music staff. Included with general admission.

2:00 p.m. – Curator’s Tour of “The Believers”: Tour Shaker Village’s newest permanent exhibit, The Believers, and delve into some of the “behind-the-scenes” decisions that influenced the exhibit’s design and content. Included with general admission.

During the “Era of Manifestations” in the 1830s and 1840s, the Shakers rediscovered the religious fervor that had characterized their earliest years in America. This outpouring of spiritual gifts – including thousands of new hymns and “gift” songs – enriched and energized life at Pleasant Hill, suffusing the whole community with the feeling of divine presence. Religious services expanded beyond the physical walls of the Meeting House to include new sacred spaces throughout the community, as well as new forms of worship.

Join us for a special guided experience as we follow in the Shakers’ footsteps and journey to “Holy Sinai’s Plain,” their outdoor worship space or "feast ground" located south of the village. Music infused all aspects of Shaker life, and the walk will be augmented by vocal performances by one of our Music Interpreters along with historical context, including readings from archival journals and records.

Hymnody was a key part of Shaker life and musical composition was an approved outlet for members' creative expression. In all, the Shakers composed upwards of 10,000 songs. Today, Shaker Village's archival collection includes a number of hand-written manuscript hymnals owned by individual Shakers. Believers carefully copied down new music into these notebooks, providing a first-hand view of some of Pleasant Hill's most treasured songs. Today, the fragile nature of these rare archival items means that they can seldom be displayed.

Join us for this special program exploring original manuscript hymnals from the Pleasant Hill collection and augmented by vocal performances from Shaker Village's Music Program Specialist.
