2026 Stewardship Saturday

Saturday, February 21, 2026 | 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Stewardship Saturday
registration coming soon

Whether they come to hike, ride or just spend the day in quiet contemplation of nature's beauty, thousands of guests visit the Preserve every year.

Managing invasive species is not only important for ensuring a quality visitor experience, but also necessary to protect a diverse, and sometimes delicate, ecosystem.

We need your help to be good stewards!

If you are not adverse to a little hard work in the outdoors, join us as we battle erosion, clear invasive species and protect one of Central Kentucky's most popular outdoor spaces.

On the third Saturday of each month, from 10 to 1, the Shaker Village Preserve Team will lead volunteer crews to help maintain the Village's trails and ecosystems.

Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers will use hand tools including shovels and loppers, and should wear leather work gloves and sturdy, closed-toe shoes or work boots.

All volunteers are eligible to receive 20% off an overnight stay (available the Thursday - Sunday nights of your stewardship weekend). Registration and promotional code coming soon.

Volunteers will also receive a voucher for 20% off one meal at The Trustees' Table! Reservations are recommended: call 859.734.5411.

Questions? Call 859.734.5411 or email [email protected] for more information.

2026 Hand-Tied Fancy Brooms

Saturday, May 30, 2026 | 2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Crafts, Brooms, Broommaking, DIY

Historically, the Pleasant Hill Shakers were known for their quality flat brooms, manufactured by the thousand and sold across the midwestern United States. In this workshop, we're returning to the craft tradition of broommaking that originally inspired the Shakers, making our own hand-tied brooms without special machinery or equipment. We'll explore decorative "fancy" brooms, using colorful cordage and intricate designs to make several different hand brooms that are as elegant as they are utilitarian.

This workshop is session #4 in a four-workshop series being offered in 2026. We will build on skill development from session to session. While not required, attendees will find it helpful to attend the sessions in sequence. Check out Basic Broomology, Turkey Wing Brooms, and Hawk-Tail Brooms.

General Admission: $60

In this workshop, we're returning to the craft tradition of broommaking that originally inspired the Shakers, making our own hand-tied brooms without special machinery or equipment. Our symmetrical "hawk tail" brooms are made of hemp cord and natural broomcorn, the same materials once used by the Shakers. We are then adding patterned, woven reed handles to our brooms, creating a beautiful piece of Shaker-inspired folk art.
